A birth chart (also called a natal chart) is a map of exactly where every planet was positioned in the sky at the precise moment and location of your birth. Think of it as a cosmic photograph — a snapshot of the entire solar system frozen in time at the instant you took your first breath.

While most people know their Sun sign (the zodiac sign determined by their birthday), a birth chart reveals a much richer picture. You don't have one sign — you have at least ten, one for each planet's position. Your Sun sign describes your core identity, but your Moon sign reveals your emotional inner world, your Rising sign shapes how others perceive you, your Venus sign governs how you love, and your Mars sign determines how you take action.

No two birth charts are identical. Even twins born minutes apart can have different Rising signs, which shifts the entire chart. Your birth chart is as unique as your fingerprint — a one-of-a-kind cosmic blueprint that has never existed before and never will again.

The Big Three

While a complete birth chart analysis involves all ten planets, twelve houses, and the geometric relationships (aspects) between them, three placements are considered the most important. Together, they're called "The Big Three":

Your Sun sign is who you are becoming — the fullest expression of your identity when you're living authentically. Your Moon sign is who you are when no one is watching — your private emotional self, your childhood patterns, your deepest needs. Your Rising sign (also called the Ascendant) is the mask you wear in public — not a false self, but the interface through which you meet the world.

Many people who don't feel like "a typical Scorpio" or "a typical Gemini" discover, upon learning their Moon and Rising signs, that the puzzle pieces suddenly click into place. You are not one sign — you are a complex constellation of energies, and the birth chart shows you exactly how they interact.

The Planets in Your Chart

Each planet in astrology governs a different area of life. The zodiac sign that planet occupies in your chart shapes HOW that energy expresses itself:

The Twelve Houses

The birth chart is divided into twelve "houses," each governing a different area of life. The zodiac sign on the cusp (beginning) of each house, and any planets residing within it, shape your experience in that domain:

What You Need to Generate Your Chart

To create an accurate birth chart, you need three pieces of information:

1. Date of birth — determines the position of all planets
2. Time of birth — determines your Rising sign and house placements (as precise as possible; check your birth certificate)
3. Location of birth — affects the exact degree of each planetary placement

Without an exact birth time, you can still determine your Sun, Moon (usually), and planetary signs — but the Rising sign and house placements will be unknown. The birth time is the most commonly missing piece, and it makes the biggest difference in chart accuracy.
