Card II · Major Arcana · Guardian of the Unconscious

Original artwork from The Divine Answer Tarot Deck
The High Priestess sits between two pillars — one black, one white — guarding the threshold between the conscious and unconscious mind. She is the keeper of hidden knowledge, the voice that speaks in dreams, the feeling you can't quite explain but know to be true. Where The Magician acts in the outer world, The High Priestess works in the inner one.
This is the archetype of deep knowing — the understanding that comes not from study or analysis but from silence, stillness, and trust in the wisdom that lives below the surface of rational thought. The High Priestess doesn't shout her truths; she whispers them to those who are quiet enough to listen.
Trust your intuition — the answer you're seeking is already within you. The High Priestess calls you to go inward, to listen to the subtle signals your body and psyche are sending, and to honor the knowledge that arrives through feeling rather than thinking. This is not the time for action; it's the time for reflection. What do you already know but haven't admitted to yourself?
Disconnection from your intuition, secrets being kept (from you or by you), or ignoring your inner wisdom in favor of external opinions. The reversed High Priestess warns that you've been looking outward for answers that can only be found within. Stop asking others what you should do and sit with the question in silence. Your body knows.
Upright: A relationship with hidden depths. The High Priestess in love suggests that there's more beneath the surface than either partner is currently expressing. It may be a call to deepen emotional intimacy by creating space for vulnerability, mystery, and the unspoken connections that bind two souls.
Reversed: Secrets in a relationship, or emotional withdrawal. Someone is holding back — keeping feelings hidden, withholding truth, or creating distance through silence. The reversed High Priestess asks what's not being said and why.
Upright: Gather more information before making a major professional decision. The High Priestess says the full picture hasn't been revealed yet — there are factors you haven't considered, information you haven't received, or dynamics you haven't perceived. Patience and observation will serve you better than action right now.
Reversed: Ignoring your gut feeling about a professional situation. You may sense that something is off — a deal that seems too good, a colleague whose energy feels wrong, a decision that logically makes sense but feels deeply uncomfortable. Trust that discomfort.
Upright: Deep spiritual insight is available if you're willing to go inward. The High Priestess invites meditation, dreamwork, and practices that quiet the rational mind and open the channels of intuitive knowing. This is a profoundly spiritual card — it affirms that the divine feminine wisdom within you is active and communicating.
Reversed: Spiritual disconnection or over-reliance on external spiritual authorities. You may be consuming spiritual content (books, podcasts, teachers) as a substitute for your own inner practice. The reversed High Priestess says: stop reading about meditation and actually meditate.
